World Archery have officially announced the qualification process for the 2021 World Games to be hosted in Birmingham, USA.
In exciting news WAO can confirm that the WAO Championships will also double as the continental qualification tournament for Compound to the 2021 World Games. It is the final results of the individual match-play event at the Championships that will determine the nations who will earn quota positions.
This is great news for the WAO Championships as the compound event has been growing in interest and competitive level over the last few editions. “Having quotas for both the 2020 Olympic Games and now 2021 World Games really gives this Championships a new level of importance; we are very excited to welcome to Fiji the best archers from all across Oceania” Said George Fong today when asked about the news. (George is the chairman of the LOC and president of World Archery Fiji)
Strong contenders for the 2021 positions will likely come from:
- AUS: Multiple World Cup/World Championship Medallists and 2019 saw a World Youth Medal in compound as well.
- NZL: In 2019 Elizabeth Randle became the first Kiwi woman to ever win the AUS open gold individually and Riku Van Tonder’s amazing 3rd place in Vegas has no doubt spurred his team mates on for more.
- FIJ: Fred Leota (the home town hopeful) won multiple medals at the 2019 Pacific Games as well as a bronze in the 2019 NZL nationals. Compound is growing fast in Fiji where they look to have a full men’s team for the first time in their history at the event.
Recurve will also have positions available for the World Games but selection these places will occur at the upcoming 2020 World Field Championships.
